Heylipol Community Trust

The future of the Heylipol Church of Scotland building as a community hub

What’s Happening?

Big Support from the Community

Loads of people are backing the idea of the Heylipol Community Trust taking over the church. Most folks who filled in the survey are in favour, and there have been over 100 suggestions for how the building could be used — not just for worship, but for things like weddings, funerals, and all sorts of community events. There are also about 40 ideas for the church grounds, plus lots of calls for repairs and improvements to make the place even better.

What Does “Member” Mean?

Some people are a bit unsure about what being a “member” actually means. Don’t worry — it doesn’t mean you’ll suddenly have a job to do! We do need a certain number of official “members” for funding reasons, but anyone is welcome to help out in whatever way suits them. And remember, you don’t have to be a churchgoer to have your say — this is for everyone in the community

Still Time to Share Your Ideas:

If you haven’t sent back your survey yet (or if you’ve lost it—easy done!), just get in touch at heylipolct@gmail.com and we’ll send you another. We’d love to hear from as many people as
possible

Why Heylipol?

Some have asked if other venues like An Talla, Hynish, or the Baptist Church could do the job. But the feedback shows Heylipol Church could offer something special—a warm, welcoming space that’s always set up and ready to use, with facilities you can’t find elsewhere on the island. We’re not planning to copy what’s already out there or bump other events — just to add something new and useful for everyone.

What Should We Call Our Supporters?

We’re looking for a friendly name for people who support the Trust. “Members”, “associate members”, and “friends of” are all in the constitution, but we’d love something more fun. Someone suggested “Heya” (Hey for Heylipol, Ya for yes)—can you think of anything better? Let us know your ideas

What’s Next?

The Church of Scotland has agreed to sell the building to us, and we’re sorting out the valuation and condition survey now. Our constitution is in with the Scottish Charity Register for approval.

Next up: We’ll be working on a business plan and starting a big fundraising campaign in 2026. Thanks so much for all your support so far—please keep sharing your thoughts and helping shape the future of Heylipol as a place for everyone.
